Ode To A Lost Friend

Monday • 26 September 2011 • 23:33
As many of you know or maybe not know, on May 30th 2011 we lost a fellow UT player Jason aka Moadebe. He had suffered a bad fall back in December in which he broke his back and never returned, but to how he passed away I am not too sure. He left behind a wife and three children.

Back in the early days of all online gaming and not just UT cheating was rife and the more popular gaming became so did cheating. Everyone was joining ClanBase to play cups and ladders etc. but without external help from coders we had very little protection against cheating until ClanBase came up with a Cheat & Abuse Department. Staff were recruited to deal with ban cases as anti-cheat software became more available to help game scenes. To operate properly the department needed a leadership and this is where Moadebe came in along with Obsidian who both became Chiefs of C&A.---

Now people might think that Moadebe was only dealing with UT related stuff because of his background but until I joined the crew this was not the case. He did a hell of lot more behind the scenes work than most people could imagine. He would contact various people who created anti-cheat software for all games and tried to get them on-board. Things like punkbuster GV and UAC3 which was the last project that he was involved with and is now successful in the CoD series.

I now find myself in his shoes which to be honest I will never fill, but I hope to do my best in the future for Anti-cheat on ClanBase and not just for UT, but for all games which are played online as I think I owe this much to the memory of Moadebe. Moadebe is now in a better place but I hope everyone out there will hold his memory every now and then and think about what he has done for most game scenes on ClanBase and as long as UT lives on then so will the legacy of Moadebe.

Respect, R.I.P Friend

Thanks for the article Apoc.

As I already said in the forum topic, he surely did a lot for the scene.

Moadebe was a great person and I'm sure he'll be missed by lots of people. :(

He did alot for CB and he was 1 of the few unbiased admins around.

It was a very sad news for all of us at ClanBase and ClanBase management... We expected Moa to come back to activity sooner or later, and then this shocking news came...

Apart from the C&A stuff, Moadebe also served as a cup supervisor in many of the early UT cups on ClanBase - including some of the EuroCups and early NationsCups.

That's a huge loss. Thanks for the article Apoc :)

RIP Moa m8

True about vids, but demos weren't all that big back then either. That being said, still quite an effort that zulg pulled with the fooze movie. Probably ordered a server just for that purpose. ...

Unfortunately no, was much harder 14 years ago to take videos of your games. It was definitely not something commonly done. YouTube? Uh no. Encryption would have been awful, file sizes massive ...
